Kurt Schepers remembers the scene vividly.

It was a few days after that day in August of 2019 when Kurt and his wife, Kris, were told the results of her biopsy. They brought their three sons — Grant, Reid and Gabriel — into the kitchen of their home to tell them that their mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Youngest son Gabriel, who is now an eighth grader at Westfield and has Down syndrome, stirred in the living room as the other four Schepers spoke in the kitchen.

“We told them the story,” Kurt said. “And Gabe comes in and goes, ‘Mom, this is not your destiny.’”

Westfield athletic trainer Kris Schepers, known as “Momma K” to dozens of Shamrock athletes, has taken on that motto from her youngest son and run with it. She admits, begrudgingly, that she has missed five days of work due to her chemotherapy treatments, including two game days.

Grant, Gabe, Kris, Kurt, and Reid Schepers pose together at their home Thursday, May 6, 2021 in Carmel. Kris Schepers is the Indianapolis Star's High School Sports Mom of the Year.

“She’s stubborn,” said her colleague at Westfield, athletic trainer Anthony Scott. “It’s a huge inspiration for all of us to see how she’s been handed this hand and still give every ounce that she has even when she felt like she had nothing. She’s ‘Momma K.’ She just has a way with these kids, coaches, parents and everybody in the community.”
