It was the perfect ending to a special day for the Iowa Central women’s soccer team here Thursday at Rogers Sports Complex.
After honoring their seven sophomores before the match, the Tritons went out and took care of business on the pitch, posting a 4-1 victory over Iowa Lakes.
Anna Pons, one of those outgoing players, scored two goals with fellow sophomores Julia Herbst and Elicia Mulvaney each finding the back of the net for Iowa Central (5-4 overall, 5-4 in ICCAC), which snapped a three-match losing skid with the triumph.
“It was great to get back in the win column and to do it on a day like this for those sophomores,” Iowa Central head coach Jared Beauchamp said. “It has been a tough year, but one fact is they all came in and made sure everyone stayed the course.
“They are a great group of players and really did a tremendous job of keeping the culture of the program throughout this tough time.”
Along with Pons, Herbst and Mulvaney, former Humboldt standout Amber Westling, Amber Vanderveer, Annabelle Friege and Flavie Sallaz were all recognized. All but Sallaz have been with the Tritons for two years now.
“They have really shown a lot of growth from freshman to sophomore year,” Beauchamp said. “They took on a tremendous leadership role for the entire team.”
Most of the group is headed to new programs to continue playing with Friege signing with Life University, Mulvaney to Young Harris College, Sallaz to the University of Maine at Fort Kent and Herbst to William Carey University, who is currently ranked No. 1 in NAIA.
Herbst’s goal was the 37th of her career as she is the current league leader in both goals and points. Pons now has six career goals and Mulvaney seven.
Pons will be continuing her education in pharmacy and Westling is headed to the University of Northern Iowa. She has played in 18 games with Iowa Central and has one assist in her career.
The Tritons conclude their regular season on Saturday, May 8 at Ottumwa against Indian Hills.
