Spring sports standouts join MLive Bay City Athlete of the Week poll | #sports | #elderly | #seniors

BAY CITY, MI — The early portion of the 2021 spring sports campaign has brought plenty of excitement, promising a whole season of thrills to come.

MLive is planning weekly recognition of some of the area’s standout performers along with a unique poll, giving readers a chance to select the MLive Bay City Athlete of the Week. In a twist from previous polls, the vote totals will not be shown until the balloting is finished at 9 a.m. Friday, April 30.

Area coaches are asked to submit nominations for next week’s poll no later than Saturday by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com.

Katherine Haupt

Katherine Haupt of the Clare girls cross country team for 2020. (Courtesy)

KATHERINE HAUPT, CLARE

A key member of Clare’s back-to-back MITCA team state championships as a freshman and sophomore, she is back for a promising senior campaign. She sports a career-best 2:25 in the 800 run and is a two-time state qualifier in the 1600 relay and 3200 relay.

Alex Jerome

ALEX JEROME, BAY CITY CENTRAL

The senior came up big with the bat in helping the Wolves land their first victories of the season. A catcher and outfielder, he notched two hits, three runs and five RBIs in 11-0 and 17-0 wins over Flint Carman-Ainsworth.

TAYLOR KRZYZANIAK, STANDISH-STERLING

The senior delivered a dream performance in a doubleheader sweep of Gladwin. She cranked three home run on the day to highlight a 4-for-8 effort with six RBIs. She also recorded the Game 1 win in the pitching circle.

FAITH KURTZ, OGEMAW HEIGHTS

The hurdles standout has her sights set on the school record in the 300 hurdles, where she came within a half-second of the mark two years ago. She set the freshman school record and the sophomore school record in the 300 and the freshman record in the 100. Also a contributor in the 1600 relay, she is signed with Cornerstone University for next year.

KENNEDY ROBERTS, REESE

The senior seems to be making up for lost time with a hot start to the season. After earning an instant varsity callup as a freshman, she missed her sophomore year to a knee injury and saw her junior year wiped out. A pitcher and second baseman, she has driven in 13 runs while batting .355 in the early season. She is signed to play at St. Clair Community College next year.

Meagan Lukowski

MEAGAN LUKOWSKI, BAY CITY WESTERN

A dynamic and highly skilled player, she is an offensive force for the Warriors. A varsity standout since her freshman year, she serves as a team captain as a senior forward. Despite not getting to play last season, she is closing in on the program record for goals scored. Lukowski is signed to play at Eastern Michigan University next season.

Mia Piotrowski

MIA PIOTROWSKI, JOHN GLENN

The sophomore infielder enjoyed a memorable trip around the bases. She launched a three-run home run in Glenn’s comeback bid against Pinconning, the first varsity blast of her young career. She tallied four hits with five RBIs in the doubleheader. She also had a three-hit, three-RBI game in a win over Birch Run.

Antonio Reyes

Antonio Reyes of the Bay City All Saints baseball team for 2021.

ANTONIO REYES, BAY CITY ALL SAINTS

Reyes has his senior season off to a strong start at the plate. He ripped four hits in a doubleheader sweep of Peck then came back to knock four more hits in a sweep of Carsonville-Port Sanilac.

KORI SCHAAF, TAWAS

Schaaf capped an incredible week in fantastic fashion, delivering a walk-off single to complete a five-run seventh inning in a 9-8 win over Hillman. Schaaf batted .542 for the week with three doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs. She also notched one win and struck out 11 in the pitching circle.

Lauren Walker

Lauren Walker of the Essexville Garber girls soccer team for 2021.

LAUREN WALKER, ESSEXVILLE GARBER

The junior go-getter sets a high-tempo pace for the Dukes. She’s able to control the midfield for the Dukes, setting up teammates and making it difficult for opponents to go on the attack. A key player in Garber’s run to the state final in 2019, she is off to a strong start this spring. She tallied a hat trick in a 7-0 win over Frankenmuth.

Nolan Zehr

NOLAN ZEHR, PINCONNING

The senior played a pivotal role in Pinconning’s first win of the season and had a strong day in a doubleheader split with Reese. Zehr drove in a run in the 4-1 victory in the first game and notched two hits with two runs scored in the nightcap.
