On January 8, the nursing home shared video of nearly a dozen seniors drumming along to Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars, with the recording quickly taking off with over two million views across Facebook and Twitter.

Fox23 reports that the class was introduced after the senior center’s Life Enrichment Director saw a video of a similar class on YouTube.

At first, when it was brought to Country Village, only two or three seniors showed up to try it — but it wasn’t long before others were joining in.

By the end of January, at least ten seniors were ready to make music and work their muscles in one of the community rooms.

A video shows an instructor at the front of the room using drum sticks to tap his own exercise ball — which is propped up on a laundry basket — and encouraging the seniors to follow along.

He mixes up the types of movements — and even gets some foot motions in — to help the seniors work on their dexterity.

‘These active seniors are having fun, exercising, and staying safe during the pandemic!’ the living center wrote on Facebook.

‘Our seniors love it!’ a spokesperson added to Fox23. ‘We are always looking for something fun to do to keep them engaged especially during the pandemic.’

Social media users love it, too: The original video has been shared 460,000 times on Facebook, while a Twitter upload has been viewed 1.9 million times.

‘I think that this absolutely fabulous! Having worked in places like that there’s nothing more depressing than seeing elderly folk hanging out of chairs in a dayroom with most of them half asleep. I imagine going to that session gives them a wee sense of self pride and purpose,’ wrote one commenter.

‘They should be performing at the Super Bowl halftime show,’ wrote another.

‘Love this and the song! Just because you’re old in years doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate current music. I don’t see anyone who seems to be objecting,’ said one more.

‘What an amazing idea! Love it they are exercising their bodies and their minds! Way to go to all the staff who make this happen,’ yet another commented.

One, though, chimed in with a critique: ‘Sorry but Ethel in the back corner is out of time and will need to be cut.’
