The Directorate-General for Health has advised children, the elderly and patients with respiratory and cardiovascular problems to stay inside while the dust cloud from North Africa remains in the air.
In a statement made available on their website, the DGS states that this North African air mass that is causing “poor air quality on the mainland” is due to continue through 31 March, but its effect may be weakened with the occurrence of predicted rainfall in some areas of the country, reducing particulate concentrations in the air.
“This pollutant (inhalable particles – PM10) has effects on human health, especially in the most sensitive population, namely children and the elderly, whose health care must be redoubled during the occurrence of these situations”, reminds the DGS, advising the general population to avoid intense and outdoor exercise.
“In case of worsening symptoms, contact Linha Saúde 24 (808 24 24 24) or go to a health centre”, concludes the DGS.
