The Barnstable High School Red Hawks baseball team runs around their new field with their new scoreboard at the end of their practice Thursday afternoon. Senior Casey Proto says, "Getting back out there and finally being able to play on the field is really good.”

Casey Proto hadn’t put on a Barnstable baseball uniform in almost two years. Proto, a senior, had been one of the team’s top pitchers since his freshman year in 2018, but lost all of last spring to the coronavirus pandemic, which wiped out the entire season across Massachusetts and many other states.

Proto finally got back on the Red Hawks’ diamond this week as the spring preseason got underway.

“Definitely a lot of excitement,” Proto said. “Driving by the field all the time and not being able to play on it, getting back out there and finally being able to play on the field is really good.”

Barnstable High School boys volleyball coach Marylou Robles talks with her team during a break in practice.

Cape schools will compete in baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse, outdoor track and field, boys volleyball, girls golf and sailing this season. Wrestling, postponed from the winter due to the pandemic, will also take place this spring, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association voting last week to allow the sport to take place and planning to meet today to discuss specific COVID-19 modifications.

Sailing, which is a non-MIAA sport, has already begun competitions. Most other sports will begin their regular seasons at the end of next week.
